Removing Rust From You Guitar Strings

Let's make your guitar strings last longer by removing rust so it wont build up and eventually lead to a broken string.

This is a home remedy on how to remove rust on guitar strings..

Things that you will need: aluminum foil(commonly used for baking cakes) and your rusty strings.

First thing you need to do is cut out a piece of aluminum foil about the size of your hand. Now face the shiny part of the foil on the string and rub it on the strings that has rust on it. Make sure to fold the aluminum foil into a small piece so that it wont easily get torn apart when you rub it on the strings. Be careful not to tear the foil we dont want to bled over rusty strings it will only cause you tetanus it can kill you. haha!!!

Ive read somewhere that soaking it on coca cola removes rust too. But im lazy i dont want to remove my strings and put it on again. :)

Remember that by removing the rust on your strings it makes your strings go thinner and it slightly affects its sound. I recommend you do this only once or twice on a set of strings.

note that this guide is not meant to make your strings last forever it will only make it last longer than the usual.

Happy strumming

  7. After doing that,i took half cut lemon and squeeze it on a piece of toilet paper then rub it on the strings.it works because the acid in it eats the rust which is left

  10. This worked for me, but to a certain extent. I went through 4 sheets of foil and the rust didnt come off fully, but there was a tangible difference, the string that was mainly affected is much smoother and way less rusty. Keep in mind that my b string was about as rusty as it could possibly be so this technique works for sure. It seems to be more effective on the higher strings, also dont rub to fast, I almost cut myself by rubbing at super lightning speed, go slow and exert plenty of pressure using your fingers/hand. I think the best way of preventing rust is washing your hands before playing.

    1. Wash your hands and DRY them before playing cause the playing on wet hands might cause some pain.

  11. I buy a lot of strings and store them since i live far from music stores on an island, problem is when i unpack them a lot of times the 10's to 18's have rust spots on them. i stopped using GHS for that reason now i see the Slinkys are doing the same thing. the rust is usually a few pretty rough sections. anybody have any lick with removing heavy rust?
